"I think I’m going to lose my job," Judy said to me last week, her voice shaky.
I froze for a moment, completely taken aback. I had first met Judy just a few months ago, when she was absolutely bursting with joy. She’d come to my yoga class with a mutual friend and couldn’t stop talking about her new job - how much she loved her boss, her coworkers, and the excitement of finally doing work she was passionate about.
"What happened?" I had to ask.
Judy let out a shaky breath and, in a panic-stricken voice, began to explain.
Shortly after starting, everything seemed to unravel. A new CEO had come in, restructured the company, and suddenly, her whole world at work shifted. She was assigned a new boss she couldn’t quite connect with, her responsibilities changed, and the sense of belonging she’d once felt with her team was nowhere to be found.
But then she gave me a half-hearted smile and said, "But it’s okay, right? Everything happens for a reason…"
"Yes," I agreed, "everything does happen for a reason. Why don't we dig in a little bit."
Because yes, everything does happen for a reason.
And sometimes, that reason is part of a forward-moving path.
In Judy’s case, that could mean a better job is opening up for her. Or perhaps her true calling is to be in business for herself. Maybe she'd been moving in that direction but, when it came time to take the leap, fear held her back, and she took a job working for someone else instead. This could be the Universe's way of guiding her back to the path of her heart.
Other times, however, the “reason” behind what’s happening is tied to a limiting belief we’re holding.
And we will never get beyond our beliefs.
We will never be able to have something in our lives in a sustainable way, when we're holding a belief that says otherwise.
Okayyy.... so... now what? How do we tell the difference?
We know the difference if it's a pattern.
If time after time, Judy starts a new position and within a few months it's disintegrated.
You enter a new relationship only to discover that, once again, it's essentially the same dynamic just with a different face.
The same applies to relationships, career, health, money and anything else. We will never get beyond our beliefs.
Our beliefs come from our emotionally-backed thought patterns. And, we can change them. We can consciously choose thoughts that back up what we want to experience, and infuse them with emotion.
Here are three simple ways to begin:
Play "Already Is." Pretend for a few moments, every day and throughout the day, that life is already as you want it to be. Feel it. See it. Breathe it. This will help you embody the energy of what you desire.
Stop and Choose Again. When you catch yourself thinking or saying something that doesn't support what you want in your life, stop. Don’t beat yourself up over it or judge yourself - simply pause and say: "No. That’s not true." Then, choose again. Affirm: I do deserve this. I am worthy of that. I am capable. I am resourceful. Shift the story you've been telling yourself.
Listen to This Affirmation Meditation. I’ve created this guided meditation Align With Your Desires to help you embody the truth of your worth. Feel the words resonate in every cell of your body and let them reinforce the new story you're crafting.
Remember, you are the creator of your reality, and the power to design your life, your way, is always within you.
